The Nigeria Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo, has unveiled Hon Mustapha Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 governorship election.

Mustapha Kwankwaso, a former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Kano State, is the son of the national leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement and NDC vice-presidential candidate, Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The announcement was made on Monday after he was presented before the party caucus and key stakeholders during a consultative meeting held at the Miller Road residence of the former governor in Kano.

Stakeholder consultation and selection process

According to the party spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, the selection followed extensive consultations within the party structure.

He explained that the Kano State chapter initially nominated Hon Mustapha Kwankwaso before forwarding his name to Mr Gwarzo for consideration.

After wider consultations with party stakeholders, Mr Gwarzo approved the nomination and officially adopted him as his running mate.

“The process was the outcome of broad consultations and careful assessment of leadership qualities required to complement the governorship candidate,” the statement said.

Political strategy and youth appeal

Mr Gwarzo described his running mate as a capable leader with strong grassroots appeal and experience in youth development and public service.

“Hon Mustapha Kwankwaso is a committed leader with proven experience in public service and youth development,” he said.

The party said the decision reflects its commitment to inclusive governance, youth empowerment, and improved service delivery if elected.

Strengthening Kwankwasiyya influence

The announcement has further reinforced political alignment within the Kwankwasiyya political structure in Kano State, a dominant bloc led by Dr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Political analysts say the move is aimed at consolidating grassroots support ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly among youth and rural voters.

The NDC also described the ticket as a blend of experience and generational appeal capable of strengthening its electoral competitiveness.

Party position ahead of 2027 elections

Mr Gwarzo, a former deputy governor, emerged as the NDC governorship candidate after his resignation from government following his political realignment.

The party urged members and supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 governorship contest, stressing transparency, accountability, and internal cohesion.
