The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed three officers allegedly involved in the death of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola, a student of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin. The officers—Inspectors Abiodun Kayode, James Emmanuel, and Sergeant Oni Phillip—were dismissed from service effective October 4, 2024, following an internal disciplinary trial. Their dismissal comes ahead of their expected arraignment in court.
The command called on the public to remain patient and have confidence in the legal process, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining law and order across Kwara State.
The incident, which occurred on September 4, 2024, involved the fatal shooting of Qoyum Abdulyekeen Ishola. According to reports, Qoyum, who had just completed his National Diploma program and was returning from the market, was allegedly shot in the right hand at a police checkpoint in the Zango area of Ilorin. The officers reportedly opened fire after Qoyum refused to pay them money. He was rushed to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital but tragically died due to excessive blood loss.
The killing sparked protests by students of the polytechnic, with many, including family members and the public, condemning the actions of the police officers and demanding justice.
The Kwara State Police spokesperson, Ejire Adeyemi Adetoun, confirmed the officers’ dismissal in a statement released late Monday evening. The statement, titled “Final Update on the Case of Qoyum Abdul Yekeen Ishola,” detailed the results of the investigation and disciplinary trial, which found the officers guilty of several offenses: leaving their post, engaging in corrupt practices, and the unlawful or unnecessary use of authority.
The statement noted, “This decisive action highlights the unwavering commitment of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to upholding justice, professionalism, and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.”
It further assured that any breach of ethical standards, particularly those leading to the loss of life, will be met with severe consequences under the current leadership. The officers are set to be arraigned in court shortly.
