The Nigeria Police Force in Lagos has arrested an 18-year-old suspect over an alleged ₦20 million threat-to-life and ransom demand case.
The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, disclosed the arrest during a briefing on Tuesday at the command headquarters in Ikeja, stating that the suspect was apprehended following a carefully executed decoy operation.
Mr Tijani said the case was reported by the Ojokoro Local Council Development Area, where authorities raised concerns over threats to life and a demand for ₦20 million ransom.
Acting on the intelligence, police operatives were deployed to track down the suspect.
“The suspect was apprehended on March 27 while attempting to collect the ransom during a sting operation,” Mr Tijani said.
He added that items recovered from the suspect include an HP laptop and a flash drive, which are currently being analysed as part of ongoing investigations.
Mr Tijani revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime and admitted involvement in a previous attempted burglary at a commercial bank.
He noted that the arrest forms part of the command’s intensified efforts to combat kidnapping, extortion, and related crimes across Lagos State.
Ongoing investigation
According to Mr Tijani, investigations are ongoing to identify possible accomplices and determine the full extent of the suspect’s criminal activities.
He said the suspect will be prosecuted upon conclusion of the investigation.
Mr Tijani reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, warning criminal elements to desist from acts that threaten public safety.
He added that the police will continue intelligence-led operations to curb crime across the state.
