For most people at a concert, church service, conference or live broadcast, good sound is something they simply expect.
They hear the singer clearly. They understand the preacher. They follow the speaker without straining their ears. They enjoy the music without being overwhelmed by excessive volume or distorted sound.

But behind that seemingly effortless experience are audio engineers and sound professionals dealing with a very different reality, difficult room acoustics, poorly designed sound systems, equipment limitations, feedback, excessive reverberation and the constant pressure to make every production better than the last.
Those challenges came into sharp focus in Lagos as audio professionals gathered at the Golden Tulip Terrace Hall, Irukka Tower, for the Wharfedale Pro Professional Audio Seminar 2026.
Organised by IRUKKA ONLINE, the authorised distributor of Wharfedale Pro, and broadcast live by Voice of the People TV (VOP TV), the technical seminar brought international audio specialists together with Nigerian sound engineers, church media teams, live production professionals and other practitioners.
For many of the participants, however, the gathering was about more than equipment.
It was about finding better answers to problems they encounter every week.
When louder is not always better
One of the central lessons from the seminar was straightforward: good sound is not necessarily loud sound.
Daniel Clarke, Business Development Manager at Wharfedale Pro, challenged the familiar approach of increasing volume whenever sound quality begins to deteriorate.
In many churches, event centres and halls, the problem is not necessarily the strength of the speakers. Sometimes, it is the room itself.
Concrete walls, high ceilings and other reflective surfaces can send sound bouncing around a venue, making speech difficult to understand and music lose its definition.
The instinct of an operator may be to turn up the volume.
But Clarke explained why that can make the situation worse.
“If you amplify bad acoustics, all you get is louder bad sound.”
The point is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where sound professionals frequently work in venues that were not originally designed around professional acoustic principles.
Instead of simply adding more power, engineers have to understand where sound is travelling, where it is reflecting and where it needs to reach.
That requires careful system design, speaker positioning, digital signal processing and an understanding of the physical characteristics of each venue.
For the audience, the difference can be substantial.
A worshipper should be able to hear a sermon from the back of a church without struggling. A conference participant should not have to lean forward to understand a speaker. A concertgoer should be able to enjoy music without being subjected to unnecessary distortion or excessive sound pressure.
In each case, technical decisions made behind the mixing console ultimately affect the experience of people in the audience.
Bringing international expertise closer to local professionals
For Irukka Online, bringing Wharfedale Pro specialists to Lagos was also about something beyond the distribution of audio equipment.
It was about knowledge transfer. Nigeria has a growing ecosystem of churches, concerts, entertainment events, conferences, television productions and outdoor shows, all of which increasingly require sophisticated audio systems.
But access to modern equipment does not automatically translate into the expertise needed to get the best performance from that equipment.
That gap between equipment and technical knowledge is where continuous training becomes important.

Among them was Marko Jovanović, Senior Audio Engineer, Application and Solutions Engineer, and WPI Spatial Audio Projects Manager.

With experience as a front-of-house and stage monitor engineer across major productions and festivals, Jovanović introduced participants to the increasingly sophisticated field of spatial audio and large-scale sound system design.
His presentation explored how sound can be controlled across large venues so that the experience remains more consistent for people sitting in different parts of the room.
For someone close to the stage, the sound should not be dramatically different from what is heard several metres away.
Achieving that consistency requires more than simply putting speakers around a venue. It involves system alignment, delay management, phase matching, crossover management and careful coordination between stage and front-of-house systems.
The science behind what audiences hear
While audiences experience only the final result, sound quality begins much earlier, inside the loudspeaker and in the engineering decisions behind it.
That was a major focus of Remo Orsoni, Wharfedale Pro’s R&D Manager and Senior Acoustic Engineer.

Orsoni took participants behind the technology, examining the relationship between loudspeaker design, transducers, cabinet construction, amplification and digital processing.
For professionals working on long-format productions, these details are not merely academic.
A speaker operating for hours during a concert, outdoor event or church service is subjected to considerable physical and thermal demands. Poorly managed systems can lead to distortion, overheating or component failure.
Understanding how equipment behaves under pressure can therefore make the difference between a smooth production and a technical failure in front of hundreds or thousands of people.
Orsoni also examined DSP tuning and system optimisation, showing how engineers can use digital processing to achieve a more controlled and consistent frequency response.
Why better sound matters to the people behind the microphone
The impact of audio engineering extends far beyond the engineer sitting behind a mixing console.
It affects everyone.
For a pastor delivering a message, clear sound means a congregation can follow the sermon.
For a musician, it means an audience can experience the performance as intended.
For a broadcaster, it can determine whether viewers and listeners remain engaged.
For a conference organiser, it means speakers can communicate without repeatedly asking, “Can you hear me?”
And for the audience, it simply means a better experience.

This is why technical capacity matters as Nigeria’s entertainment, worship, events and broadcast sectors continue to evolve.
The country has no shortage of talented sound engineers. What professionals also need is continued access to knowledge, emerging technologies and opportunities to learn from specialists and from one another.
From equipment ownership to technical expertise
The Lagos seminar also highlighted an important shift in the professional audio conversation.
It is gradually moving from “What equipment do we have?” to “Do we know how to use it properly?”
A powerful loudspeaker cannot compensate for poor system design. An expensive mixing console cannot automatically produce a good mix. And sophisticated digital processing cannot replace an engineer who understands the room, the audience and the demands of the production.
That understanding comes through experience, continuous education and exposure to evolving industry practices.
By bringing Wharfedale Pro’s international technical team to Lagos, Irukka Online positioned the seminar as part of that learning process, giving Nigerian professionals an opportunity to engage directly with specialists involved in system engineering, research and development and large-scale audio applications.
Building the future of sound in West Africa
The significance of the seminar ultimately goes beyond the equipment displayed inside the Golden Tulip Terrace Hall.

It is about the people who will operate the next generation of concert systems, churches, broadcast studios, conference venues and entertainment spaces across Nigeria and the wider region.
As productions become more sophisticated and audiences become more demanding, the margin for poor technical execution becomes smaller.
The future of professional audio in Nigeria will therefore depend not only on access to world-class technology, but also on the people who understand how to deploy it effectively.
For the engineers who attended the masterclass, the most valuable takeaway may not have been a new product or another technical specification.
It was knowledge that could be taken back to their churches, studios, event centres, concerts and production rooms.
And for the millions of Nigerians who will eventually sit on the other side of those speakers, that knowledge could make the difference between simply hearing something and actually experiencing it clearly.
That may be the most important sound coming out of the Lagos seminar, the sound of an industry becoming better equipped, better informed and more technically prepared for the future.
