Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has approved scholarships for more than 760 beneficiaries under the state’s 2025/2026 Local Scholarship Scheme as part of efforts to expand access to education and strengthen human capital development.

The approval was disclosed on Tuesday in Enugu, by the Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board, Chukwuemeka Mbah, in a statement made available to journalists.

According to Mr Mbah, beneficiaries were selected across the 17 local government areas of the state and cut across different academic categories and disciplines.

He stated that the beneficiaries include over 500 undergraduate students, 100 postgraduate students and 160 public sector teachers.

Verification process begins

Mr Mbah explained that successful applicants who passed the Computer-Based Test have already started receiving notifications through text messages and emails for verification and documentation.

He noted that the exercise would be conducted on a local government-by-local government basis to ensure an organised and transparent process.

He said the scholarship initiative reflects Governor Peter Mbah’s broader commitment to education, youth empowerment and workforce development.

Education investment drive

According to Mr Mbah, the programme forms part of the administration’s strategy to remove financial barriers preventing qualified residents from accessing higher education.

He urged successful applicants to respond promptly to invitations sent to them to avoid delays in completing the documentation process.

Mr Mbah added that the state government plans to expand the initiative in subsequent phases.

“More beneficiaries will be captured in the next phase of the scholarship programme. It’s open to the people of Enugu State, and I want to urge our people to continue to apply.

“This is not the time to say you’re unable to get quality education because of funding. The governor has made it easy for our people to access free, quality education,” he stated.

The scholarship programme is part of Enugu State’s broader education agenda, which includes investments in infrastructure, digital learning, teacher capacity development and policies designed to improve access to quality education across the state.
