The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has dismissed a viral notice claiming it suspended student loan disbursements, describing the document as fake.

In a statement posted on X on Saturday, the agency clarified that it has not announced any pause in its student loan programme and urged the public to rely only on verified communication channels.

“This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive,” the fund stated.

The fake notice had claimed that “due to unforeseen operational circumstances… NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect.”

Warning against misinformation

NELFUND advised students and stakeholders to verify information through its official platforms to avoid being misled by false reports.

The agency stressed the importance of accurate information, especially given the growing number of beneficiaries under the scheme.

Programme impact

The clarification comes amid increased attention on the initiative, which the Federal Government says has supported access to higher education nationwide.

According to official figures, the scheme has benefited over one million students since its launch, with more than ₦1.1 billion disbursed.

In addition, over 160,000 youths have received digital skills training under related government programmes.
