Weather | NiMet predicts 3-day sunshine, thunderstorms from Wednesday

Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather forecast predicting a mix of sunshine and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday.

In its three-day weather outlook released on Tuesday in Abuja, NiMet outlined varying weather conditions expected across the northern, central, and southern regions of Nigeria.

Wednesday Forecast

• Northern Region: Predominantly sunny skies, with potential thunderstorms later in the day in southern parts of Adamawa and Taraba States.

• North Central: Sunny with few clouds. Morning thunderstorms are expected in Kwara and Niger, while Kogi, Kwara, and Plateau may experience thunderstorms in the afternoon.

• Southern Region: Cloudy skies in the morning with chances of thunderstorms in Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. Thunderstorms are likely later in the day in Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Thursday Forecast

• Northern Region: Sunny conditions expected, with possible evening thunderstorms in Taraba.

• North Central: Mostly sunny with isolated thunderstorms later in the day in the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Plateau, and Nasarawa.

• Southern Region: Cloudy skies with chances of morning thunderstorms in Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos. Isolated thunderstorms are expected later in Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Delta, and Edo.

Friday Forecast

• Northern Region: Sunny conditions expected, with possible thunderstorms in southern Adamawa, Taraba, and Kaduna in the afternoon or evening.

• North Central: Sunny skies with some clouds. Morning thunderstorms in parts of the FCT and Niger, with isolated storms later in Kwara, Kogi, and Niger.

• Southern Region: Cloudy morning expected with chances of thunderstorms in Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Bayelsa, and Delta. Later thunderstorms may occur in Abia, Imo, Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Rivers, and Bayelsa.

Health & Safety Advisory

NiMet warned of high temperatures across much of the country, raising concerns over heat stress. The agency urged the public to:

• Stay in cool, well-ventilated areas

• Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated

• Get vaccinated against meningitis

• Practice good hygiene and avoid crowded spaces

• Wear nose masks and avoid close contact with the sick

• Avoid peak sun hours (12pm to 3pm) and limit direct sun exposure

NiMet advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective flight planning, especially in regions expected to experience strong winds ahead of thunderstorms.
