The Abia State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has praised Governor Alex Otti for approving the full implementation of the 100% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) for doctors employed by the state government.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Umuahia, the state NMA Chairman, Dr. Ezinwa Ezuruike, described the governor’s decision—announced on April 29—as a landmark move that restores long-awaited pay parity for state-employed doctors.
Ezuruike said the approval reflects Governor Otti’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and improving the welfare of medical professionals in the state.

“By aligning Abia’s medical salary structure with the federal CONMESS, the governor has once again demonstrated visionary leadership and a deep appreciation of the sacrifices and critical contributions of healthcare workers,” he stated.
The NMA also applauded the government’s recent approval for the recruitment of 771 new healthcare workers across various professional cadres in the state, calling it a bold and strategic investment in human resources for health.
“This timely initiative is a major step toward revitalising Abia’s healthcare system. As an association, we reaffirm our commitment to delivering quality healthcare services across the state,” Ezuruike added.
He emphasized that the gesture is viewed not just as the fulfillment of a promise, but also as a renewed call to dedication and excellence in service to the people of Abia.
The association also acknowledged the efforts of the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche; the Governor’s Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Ngozi Azodo; and other key stakeholders for their roles in achieving this milestone.
