The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has denied reports that it is selling refinery scrap materials, warning the public against fraudulent individuals posing as its agents.

The clarification was issued on Friday in a statement by the company’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andy Odeh, amid growing circulation of alleged sales offers linked to its refineries.

Company denial

NNPC stated that it has not authorised any sale of scrap materials, equipment, or refinery components from its facilities in Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna.

“NNPC Limited wishes to alert the public to the circulation of misleading and false information suggesting that the company is selling scrap materials…,” the statement read.

“The company wishes to categorically state that this information is untrue. NNPC Limited has not issued any request for bids, tenders, expressions of interest, or approvals for such sales.”

Warning over impersonation

The company disclosed that it had received reports of individuals falsely presenting themselves as its representatives, claiming to facilitate the sale of refinery scrap and equipment.

NNPC warned that such individuals are unauthorised and are attempting to mislead unsuspecting members of the public.

“For the avoidance of doubt, NNPC Limited is not conducting, nor has it authorised, any sale of scrap metals… from any of its facilities,” it stated.

The company urged the public, corporate organisations, and stakeholders to disregard such claims and exercise caution when approached.

Advisory to the public

NNPC further advised anyone encountering such solicitations to report the matter to law enforcement authorities.

It emphasised that any legitimate disposal of assets would follow transparent procedures and be communicated through official channels in line with regulatory requirements.

“Any legitimate disposal of assets… will only be conducted through established and transparent processes,” the statement added.

Refinery status and concerns

The clarification comes against the backdrop of longstanding concerns over the operational status of Nigeria’s refineries, many of which have remained idle despite multiple rehabilitation efforts.

However, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Bayo Ojulari, has maintained that the refineries will be revived.

The development highlights increasing risks of scams tied to major public institutions, especially in sectors like oil and gas where asset sales and contracts often attract public attention.

NNPC reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible management of national energy assets.
