Activist Aisha Yesufu has said Peter Obi remains committed to serving only one term if elected president, drawing comparisons with global leaders known for legacy-driven governance.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, Yesufu reaffirmed that she would oppose Obi if he reneges on his one-term pledge.
“If Mr Peter Obi gets into office and decides to do more than one term, I, Aisha Yesufu, and I repeat it here, I will oppose him with everything in me, because he gave his word,” she said.
She noted that the former Labour Party presidential candidate had maintained the position since 2022.
Yesufu disclosed that she personally sought a fresh assurance from Obi after the 2023 presidential election.
“I need your word on this… Is it true you’re going to do just one term?” she recalled asking him.
According to her, Obi reaffirmed his stance, saying he stands by his words and values integrity.
Leadership philosophy
The activist expressed confidence that Obi would honour the commitment, describing him as a leader focused on impact rather than longevity in office.
She compared his outlook to that of Nelson Mandela and Lee Kuan Yew, noting that both leaders are remembered for legacy and transformational governance.
“When he talks, you see him put himself in the likes of Lee Kuan Yew… especially more of Nelson Mandela,” she said.
Governance without re-election pressure
Yesufu argued that leaders who are not seeking re-election are more likely to make bold decisions in the national interest.
“When you know you’re not coming back, you’re able to make decisions that work more for the nation, rather than decisions that work for a few people,” she said.
His reported one-term stance has remained a subject of political debate, especially as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections and discussions around leadership alternatives intensify.
