A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Giwa Odulana, popularly known as Ajirotutu, has formally declared his intention to contest the Ogun East Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Odulana made the declaration on Wednesday during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the PDP Ward 3 Secretariat in Itantebo, Ijebu-Ode, where he outlined his political ambition and development agenda for the district.

The declaration comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with early contenders positioning themselves across party structures in Ogun State.

Youth, development and political change

Odulana said his decision to join the senatorial race was driven by what he described as persistent governance gaps in education, healthcare, youth employment, and infrastructure across the Ogun East senatorial district.

He positioned himself as a candidate representing generational change, pledging to prioritise inclusive governance and development across the nine local government areas in the district.

“I have come here today to say that I will be running for the Ogun East Senatorial seat in 2027… there are definitely lapses in governance in education, health, job creation for our youth, and good roads,” he said.

He also criticised the ruling party in the state, stating that “the All Progressives Congress has been quite disappointing” and arguing that the 2027 elections present an opportunity for leadership renewal.

Legislative agenda and policy focus

Odulana said his ambition is rooted in delivering “meaningful development” through effective lawmaking and constituency representation at the Senate.

“If I get the needed support and you send me to the Senate in 2027, we shall not leave anyone behind,” he said.

He promised to focus on youth empowerment, women inclusion, infrastructure development, and policies aimed at improving living standards across Ogun East.

He further explained that his background in engineering and estate development positions him to better understand infrastructure challenges and contribute to practical solutions if elected.

Party reaction and political outlook

Speaking at the event, the Ogun State PDP Vice Chairman, Otunba Ayinde Awobadejo, welcomed Odulana into the senatorial race and assured him of a fair internal party process.

Awobadejo described the PDP as a credible alternative ahead of 2027, urging members to intensify mobilisation efforts against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the opposition party remains “the only hope Nigerians have” to address prevailing economic and governance challenges.

Growing early race in Ogun East

Odulana’s declaration adds to early political manoeuvring in Ogun East, where aspirants are increasingly engaging party stakeholders ahead of primaries expected closer to the 2027 election cycle.

Political observers note that early declarations reflect heightened competition within party structures as aspirants seek to consolidate grassroots support.
