Outrage has continued to trail the obstruction of the convoy of 2027 presidential hopeful Peter Obi in Benue State, with political groups and public figures demanding an investigation into the incident.
Obi’s convoy was reportedly stopped by a group of youths along the Gboko-Makurdi road on Tuesday while he was travelling towards Yelwata, where he planned to meet communities and families affected by the deadly violence in the area.
The incident sparked a wave of political reactions, with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and other opposition figures condemning what they described as an unacceptable obstruction of a political leader’s movement.
The police confirmed that Obi’s convoy was obstructed and said an investigation was underway to determine what led to the incident. Reports also indicate that security personnel were deployed to protect the former Anambra State governor and prevent the situation from escalating.
Obi Accuses ‘Hired Thugs’
Obi, who is the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, described the incident as an attempt to prevent him from carrying out his planned humanitarian visit.
He said he had travelled to Benue to show solidarity with communities affected by violence and to meet families who lost loved ones.
According to Obi, youths blocked his convoy and prevented him from reaching Yelwata.
The incident has raised concerns about the increasingly tense political atmosphere ahead of the 2027 general elections, particularly over whether political disagreements could interfere with the freedom of movement and activities of opposition politicians.
Benue Government Denies Involvement
The Benue State Government has rejected allegations that it organised or sponsored the blockade.
Government officials said they were not responsible for the action and accused Obi of failing to follow the appropriate protocol before visiting the state.
The government maintained that it would not deploy thugs to stop a political figure from moving around the state, insisting that security matters should be handled by the relevant security agencies.
The conflicting accounts have consequently shifted attention to the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identity or motivation of the youths who blocked the convoy.
Opposition Demands Probe
The NDC has called for an investigation into the incident, describing the obstruction as a serious development that should not be ignored.
Other political actors have also condemned the incident, arguing that political disagreements should be settled through democratic competition rather than confrontation or physical obstruction.
Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has gone further by alleging that the Benue State Government was behind the action.
Sowore’s claim, however, remains an allegation and has not been independently established. The Benue Government has denied involvement, while the police have said investigations are ongoing.
Keyamo Condemns Blockade
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo also condemned the obstruction, saying such conduct should not form part of Nigeria’s democratic process.
Keyamo argued that political disagreements should be resolved through elections rather than through intimidation or violence.
His reaction came amid growing debate over the incident and the broader political environment ahead of the 2027 elections.
Police Investigation
The police response has become an important part of the controversy.
While the Benue Government said it was not involved and questioned whether Obi had followed the required protocol for the visit, the police confirmed that they were aware of the visit and had security arrangements in place.
The police have said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the blockade, including what prompted the youths to obstruct the convoy.
That investigation could become critical in determining whether the incident was simply a spontaneous confrontation involving local youths or whether there was a wider political organisation behind it.
A Bigger Political Concern
The incident comes at a sensitive period as political parties and presidential aspirants begin positioning themselves for the 2027 elections.
Obi remains one of the major opposition figures in the emerging political contest, while opposition parties are simultaneously facing pressure to unite behind a single candidate capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.

For a democracy preparing for another major election, political actors must be able to travel, meet supporters and engage communities without fear of intimidation or violence.
At the same time, allegations of government involvement in such incidents must be subjected to proper investigation rather than treated as established facts.
