The Oyo State Government has declared Monday, 5 October, a work-free day for all teachers across the state as part of activities marking this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
The directive was contained in a circular issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde.
A statement by the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, said the decision was aimed at recognising the contributions of teachers to the state’s education system.
The government described teachers as the backbone of Oyo’s educational system and key contributors to human capital development.
It said the declaration reflected the administration’s commitment to the welfare, dignity and professional development of teachers across the state.
Teachers to participate in World Teachers’ Day activities
According to the government, the work-free day will allow teachers to participate fully in activities organised to mark the annual celebration.
The government said the occasion would also give teachers an opportunity to reflect on developments within the education sector and strengthen unity among members of the teaching community.
It congratulated teachers across Oyo State and reaffirmed its commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving teaching and learning.
Other states announce similar break
Oyo was not the only state to declare Monday work-free for teachers.
The Kwara and Ekiti State governments also announced a work-free day for teachers on 5 October to enable them to participate in activities marking the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
For teachers in Oyo, the decision means a day away from classroom duties to celebrate their profession, reflect on their role in educating children and engage in activities dedicated to their welfare and professional development.
