Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has congratulated Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen following his outstanding performances that helped Galatasaray secure the Turkish Süper Lig title.
Mr Osimhen scored twice in the decisive victory that confirmed the championship for the Turkish side, further strengthening his reputation as one of Nigeria’s top football exports.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Monday, Mr Obi praised the Super Eagles forward for his discipline, resilience, and dedication.
“I want to join other fans in congratulating one of Nigeria’s many talented exports, Victor Osimhen, for successfully leading Galatasaray to the Turkish Süper Lig title with a brilliant performance,” he said.
Mr Obi stated that the footballer’s achievements continue to inspire millions of young Nigerians.
“Your resilience, discipline, and talent continue to inspire millions of young Nigerians to believe in the power of hard work, dedication, and excellence,” he added.
He also described Mr Osimhen as a proud ambassador of Nigeria on the global stage.
Mr Osimhen has continued to attract international recognition following his impressive performances in European football, becoming one of Africa’s most celebrated strikers.
Call for greater investment in sports
Mr Obi used the occasion to advocate increased investment in sports development in Nigeria, lamenting what he described as the neglect of the sector despite the country’s abundant talent.
“I have often spoken about the transformative power of sports and the immense opportunities it offers to young people,” he said.
“The persistent neglect of the sector in our country is deeply regrettable.”
According to Mr Obi, Nigeria possesses numerous talented youths capable of excelling globally if provided with adequate support and opportunities.
“The truth is that Nigeria is blessed with countless talents like Osimhen, waiting for the right leadership, support, and environment to rise, excel, and bring glory to the nation,” he stated.
Message of national hope
Mr Obi reiterated his belief in Nigeria’s potential for growth across multiple sectors.
“I reiterate that a new Nigeria, where all sectors develop simultaneously for the balanced growth and health of the nation, is possible,” he said.
He concluded by wishing Mr Osimhen continued success in his football career.
