The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated that bail is free for offences that are legally bailable, warning members of the public against paying money to secure the release of suspects from police custody. The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, made this known today during an appearance on The Morning Show on Voice of the People TV.
Adebisi explained that bail is not a payment for the release of a suspect but an undertaking by a surety to ensure that the suspect is available whenever required for further investigation. She, however, clarified that not every offence is bailable, noting that serious offences such as murder and rape are subject to different legal provisions.
The police spokesperson urged members of the public to report officers who demand money for bail through the Command’s complaints channels. She said officers found culpable are sanctioned, with some facing demotion or removal from the Force, adding that complainants can provide details such as the suspect’s name, date of the incident and police division involved to aid investigation.
Adebisi further disclosed that about five police officers were being detained at the time of the interview over allegations connected to bail and harassment. She said the Inspector-General of Police had also directed police commands to sanitise their divisions and reduce incidents of illegal bail payments to the barest minimum.
