Politics is not a game to us in the AAC — Rex Elanu speaks on opposition coalition talks on VOP

Comrade Rex Elanu of the African Action Congress (AAC) has insisted that politics is a matter of life and liberation for his party, not a game of elite power-sharing, as opposition figures weigh possible alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Voice of the People, Elanu addressed ongoing discussions involving the AAC, Accord Party and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He said the talks were less about formal party mergers and more about three individuals who share a historical commitment to the democratic struggle and good governance in Nigeria.

“Politics is not a game for us in the AAC. Politics is actually a matter of our lives,” Elanu declared. He stressed that the party’s primary focus remains “the biggest coalition of the oppressed people of Nigeria,” one capable of delivering economic justice, social justice and total liberation rather than conventional horse-trading over who becomes the sole presidential candidate.

Elanu pushed back against questions about who would emerge as the “arrowhead” of any alliance. He argued that reducing the conversation to individual candidacy reduces the struggle to ordinary politics-as-usual. The real priority, he said, is collapsing the old order and establishing a new one driven by the collective will of the masses.

He noted that the emerging discussions have already condemned the removal of fuel subsidy and the devaluation of the naira. On the AAC’s own position, Elanu was clear: the party would reverse the subsidy removal. He said the money spent on dysfunctional or underperforming refineries and related deals could have been used to fix existing facilities and end the cycle of subsidy-related corruption that successive governments have failed to confront.

Elanu’s remarks come as opposition realignments intensify ahead of 2027, with parties and candidates exploring ways to present a stronger challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

A consistent voice for radical change within the AAC, Elanu maintained that genuine transformation will not come from recycled elite pacts but from a broad coalition of ordinary Nigerians determined to break with the politics of the past.
