Nigeria’s Super Falcons players have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s financial pledge to the team after their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.

The National Sports Commission announced the payment on Monday, saying the coaches and officials also received the equivalent of $50,000 each.

President Tinubu had announced the cash rewards during a presidential reception for the team at the State House in Abuja on 28 July 2025, after the Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the WAFCON final.

Each player was promised the naira equivalent of $100,000, while members of the 11-man technical crew were to receive $50,000 each.

The latest payment completes the cash component of the reward package. The players had earlier received title documents for three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates for the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.

Falcons staged dramatic comeback

The Super Falcons secured their 10th continental title in July 2025 after coming from two goals down to defeat Morocco 3-2 in the final in Rabat.

The victory extended Nigeria’s record as the most successful team in the history of the women’s continental championship.

The team’s achievement also earned Nigeria $1 million in prize money.

Dikko commends President Tinubu

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, thanked President Tinubu for fulfilling his commitment to the players.

Mr Dikko said the Super Falcons had made Nigeria proud and deserved recognition for their achievement.

He noted that the fulfilment of the reward package represented a departure from previous experiences in which Nigerian athletes waited for years before receiving promised benefits.

The NSC said the payment was made through collaboration between the commission and the Ministries of Finance, Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and Housing and Urban Development.

Payment follows D’Tigress reward

The development comes after the Federal Government similarly fulfilled its $100,000 cash pledge to members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their fifth consecutive Women’s AfroBasket title in 2025.

The D’Tigress players received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each, while officials received $50,000 each, alongside other components of their reward package.
