The Super Falcons of Nigeria are out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a painful 1–0 defeat to Cameroon on Sunday.
Nigeria went into the quarter-final as the defending champions and one of the favourites to win the tournament. But after 90 minutes of football in Casablanca, it was Cameroon who celebrated, while the Falcons were left to face another disappointing exit.
One Goal Was Enough
The match was decided by a single goal.
Cameroon took the lead in the 19th minute through Nyadjou, putting Nigeria under pressure early in the game. The Super Falcons then spent much of the match trying to find an equaliser.
Nigeria created opportunities and pushed forward, but Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Michaely Bihina, was outstanding. She made several important saves to keep her team in front and was eventually named Woman of the Match.
Despite Nigeria’s efforts, the equalising goal never came.
When the final whistle was blown, Cameroon had secured a 1–0 victory and a place in the WAFCON semi-finals.
A Tough Ending for the Champions
The defeat is particularly painful because Nigeria came into the competition as the defending champions.
Just a few days earlier, the Falcons had shown their attacking strength by beating Egypt 6–2 and qualifying for the quarter-finals. That big win raised hopes that Nigeria could go all the way again.
Unfortunately, the game against Cameroon was a completely different story.
The Falcons found it difficult to turn their possession and attacking pressure into goals. Cameroon defended bravely, protected their early advantage and did enough to secure the win.
What Happens Next?
For Nigerian fans, the disappointment will take some time to disappear.
The Super Falcons remain one of Africa’s most successful women’s football teams, and one defeat does not erase that history. Nigeria has dominated women’s football on the continent for decades and has produced some of Africa’s biggest female football stars.
But this defeat also shows that African women’s football is becoming increasingly competitive. Teams like Cameroon are no longer simply hoping to compete with Nigeria; they believe they can beat the Falcons, and on Sunday, they proved it.
For the Super Falcons, the focus now has to shift from disappointment to rebuilding.
The players, coaches and football authorities will need to look honestly at what went wrong, improve where necessary and prepare for the challenges ahead.
The Fans Still Have a Reason to Believe
Football can be cruel. Sometimes a team can fight hard, create chances and still walk away without a victory.
That is what happened to the Super Falcons.
They may have lost their WAFCON title defence, but their journey does not end here. Nigeria still has talented players, passionate supporters and a proud football history.
The lesson from this defeat is simple: there is work to do, but there is also plenty of reason to hope.
For now, Cameroon move on.
Nigeria goes home disappointed.
But the Super Falcons will have another opportunity to rise, regroup and remind Africa why they remain one of the continent’s greatest women’s football teams.
