Switzerland secured a place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16 after recording a comfortable 2-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday.

The Swiss side produced a composed performance to eliminate Algeria and book a place in the knockout stage, where they will face the winners of Friday’s clash between Colombia and Ghana.

Switzerland took the lead through Breel Embolo after an impressive attacking move orchestrated by Johan Manzambi.

Manzambi burst down the left flank before delivering a precise cross that Embolo calmly tapped into the net to give the Swiss the advantage.

Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s lead in the second half with a low strike that travelled through a crowded penalty area.

Algerian goalkeeper Luca Zidane was unable to keep out the effort as Switzerland sealed a deserved victory and progressed to the next round.

Algeria exit tournament

The defeat brings Algeria’s World Cup campaign to an end, making them the latest African nation to exit the competition.

Algeria join Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal among African teams eliminated in the round of 32, with Morocco remaining the continent’s only representative still in the tournament.

Switzerland will now await the outcome of the Colombia versus Ghana fixture to determine their round-of-16 opponents.
