Abuja — There was heightened security presence in parts of Abuja on Monday as armed police officers and water cannon trucks were deployed to major roads ahead of a planned mass protest by civil society groups demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
According to a tweet posted by the handle @AFRICA, security operatives were seen stationed at strategic locations across the city as protesters gathered to press for Kanu’s freedom.
The tweet read: “Meanwhile in Nigeria, armed police officers and water cannons have taken over the streets of Abuja over the massive protest from civil society demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu. Tinubu’s fall will be televised.”
Eyewitnesses confirmed that protesters carrying placards were chanting solidarity songs and calling on the Federal Government to comply with court orders granting Kanu bail and release.
Security operatives, however, maintained tight control around key protest zones, including Unity Fountain and parts of the Central Business District, to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order.
As of press time, the protest remained peaceful, and there were no reports of violence or arrests.
