Agyaragu town in Nasarawa State was thrown into chaos on Thursday night as unknown gunmen stormed a popular pharmacy, killing a young woman and abducting the shop owner along with two of his workers.
The brazen attack, which occurred at around 8:44 p.m. in the heart of Agyaragu, lasted for nearly an hour—without any security intervention. Eyewitnesses described a scene of horror as the heavily armed assailants fired indiscriminately, sending residents into panic.
“The gunmen were well-armed. Their shooting scared everybody. They forced the owner of Emmy Gold Pharmacy Nigeria Limited and two of his boys into the bush,” an eyewitness recounted.
Attempts by local youths to confront the attackers were met with heavy gunfire, forcing them to retreat.
Fear and Lawlessness Grip Agyaragu
The escalating wave of kidnappings in the region has left residents living in constant fear. Jonah Yakubu, a concerned resident, lamented the increasing insecurity, noting that kidnappers now operate with impunity, often demanding exorbitant ransoms from desperate families.
“The government must act now. We need more security presence in Agyaragu and surrounding areas,” Yakubu pleaded, urging the governor and security agencies to take decisive action against the criminals.
Police Silent as Panic Spreads
Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Nasarawa State Police Command for confirmation of the incident were unsuccessful, further fueling concerns about the government’s ability to curb the growing insecurity.
With Agyaragu residents demanding urgent intervention, the attack raises serious questions about the safety of communities in Nasarawa and the increasing boldness of criminal gangs operating unchecked.
