Senate President Godswill Akpabio has alleged that people attacking President Bola Tinubu and his supporters on social media are being paid, urging youths in the North to intensify grassroots mobilisation for the President’s re-election in 2027.
Mr Akpabio made the allegation on Wednesday when members of the Arewa Revival Project, a northern youth group drawn from the 19 northern states, paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
The group, led by its coordinator, Mustafa Ibrahim, also presented an award to the Senate President in recognition of his contributions to nation-building.
Mr Akpabio, while thanking the group for the recognition, urged its members to mobilise support for President Tinubu at the grassroots and help Nigerians understand what he described as the benefits of continuity in government.
He said some people attacking the President and his supporters online were being paid, while urging the youths to engage their peers and counter what he described as social media propaganda.
“You may not be able to have the kind of energy and time with them. But once in a while, gather the youth together and let them see the truth and know the truth,” he said.
The Senate President maintained that attacking a government he believes is working for Nigerians and creating uncertainty was not in the country’s interest.
Senate President defends Tinubu’s policies
Mr Akpabio also defended the Tinubu administration’s economic policies, particularly its tax reforms, saying the government was working to move Nigeria away from dependence on crude oil.
He urged Nigerian youths to rise above what he called social media propaganda, claiming that the President had introduced innovations through the tax reform system and changes to existing laws.
Mr Akpabio further said members of the National Assembly had given President Tinubu a “pass mark” and endorsed him for a second term.
Akpabio speaks on state police
On insecurity, the Senate President expressed optimism that the proposed State Police system would soon become a reality.
He said the constitutional amendment process was nearing completion, claiming that about 30 states had endorsed the amendment seeking to establish decentralised policing.
According to him, the proposed system would strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and improve the country’s response to insecurity.
Mr Akpabio urged the northern youths to remain confident as they embark on campaign activities for the 2027 election, expressing optimism that the country would overcome its security challenges.
