President Bola Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase ranging between 30 and 80 percent for approximately 250,000 personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The updated remuneration package, scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2026, aims to improve troop welfare and boost morale across security operations nationwide.
Under the approved structure, the highest percentage increases are directed toward junior personnel. Servicemen from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 percent pay rise. Officers ranging from Warrant Officer up to the rank of Colonel will receive a 50 percent increase, while senior officers above Colonel rank, including Generals, will see a 30 percent boost.
The government confirmed that the pay adjustment will elevate the annual military salary bill from N660 billion to N924 billion. The administration emphasized that the gesture reflects national appreciation for the continuous sacrifices made by military personnel in combating terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping across the country. In addition to enhanced remuneration, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing the armed forces through the provision of advanced weapons and logistics support to strengthen national defense capabilities.
