The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Lagos (UNILAG) branch, has declared an indefinite strike action effective Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The decision was reached following an emergency Congress where members expressed outrage over the receipt of “amputated” salary payments for January and February 2026.
In a communiqué signed by the Chairperson, Prof. Idowu Kehinde, and the Secretary, Dr Adesina Arikawe, the union directed all academic staff to withdraw their services immediately. The strike covers all teaching, examination, and statutory meetings until the Federal Government addresses the shortfall in payments.
“The Congress viewed the consistent mutilation of our members’ salaries as an affront to our dignity and a violation of our contractual agreements,” the statement read. “Until these salaries are fully restored and arrears cleared, all academic activities remain suspended.”
The industrial action comes amid heightened tensions between the Federal Government and university lecturers over unresolved welfare issues and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).
As of Tuesday afternoon, lecture halls across the Akoka campus remained empty, with students seen vacating the premises. The University Management has yet to release an official response regarding the disruption of the academic calendar.
