Lagos State lawmaker and actor, Desmond Elliot, has apologised to the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, following political tensions that strained their relationship, while appealing for reconciliation.
The apology comes amid fallout from the Lagos State House of Assembly crisis and the controversy surrounding the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Mr Elliot described Mr Gbajabiamila as a political mentor and acknowledged the role he played in his political journey.
The lawmaker said he regretted the disagreements that had developed between them and expressed a desire to restore their relationship.
The apology comes after Mr Gbajabiamila had spoken publicly about the political fallout involving Mr Elliot, including claims that the Surulere lawmaker’s actions during the Assembly crisis nearly cost him his position as Chief of Staff to President Tinubu.
Lagos Assembly crisis
The disagreement between the two politicians became particularly prominent during the crisis that engulfed the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Mr Elliot had previously explained his decision to sign the impeachment notice against former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, saying he believed the move had presidential backing before later expressing shock over the consequences of the development.
The dispute subsequently fuelled speculation about a breakdown in relations between Mr Elliot and Mr Gbajabiamila.
Mr Elliot has since maintained that there was no permanent feud between them and has continued to pursue his political ambitions in Surulere.
Elliot appeals for reconciliation
In his latest intervention, Mr Elliot sought to put the political disagreement behind them, appealing for forgiveness and reconciliation.
His move signals an attempt to restore the political relationship that existed before the Assembly crisis and the disagreements that followed.
The development is significant because Mr Gbajabiamila has been an influential political figure in Lagos and a major figure in Mr Elliot’s political career.
The reconciliation appeal comes as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 elections, with Lagos politicians positioning themselves for another round of party contests and political negotiations.
For Mr Elliot, who has expressed interest in continuing his representation of Surulere, repairing ties with influential political figures could be important as he navigates the next stage of his political career.
