A 35-year-old woman, Jennifer Monday, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting her sister, Ruth John, with a log of wood.
The defendant, a resident of Maraba Rido, Kaduna, is facing two charges: assault and causing grievous harm.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Chidi Leo, the incident occurred on June 6 around 7:00 p.m. at the defendant’s residence. Leo told the court that the altercation started when the complainant visited the defendant to discuss matters concerning their ailing mother. During the conversation, an argument broke out, during which the defendant allegedly struck her sister on the head with a log of wood.

The complainant was rushed to the hospital and later reported the incident to the police, leading to the defendant’s arrest.
Leo said the offences contravene Sections 58 and 284 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017. Section 58 carries a maximum sentence of one year imprisonment, while Section 284 prescribes a minimum of five years imprisonment upon conviction.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail to the defendant in the sum of ₦200,000, with one surety in the same amount. He ruled that the surety must be a blood relative of the defendant, submit four recent passport photographs, and provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
The case was adjourned to July 20 for hearing.
