Argentina captain Lionel Messi has downplayed his record-equalling achievement at the FIFA World Cup, saying the milestone is “just a statistic” after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s 3–0 win over Algeria in Kansas City.

The 38-year-old forward, who also plays for Inter Miami CF, delivered a standout performance on Wednesday, becoming the joint all-time top scorer in World Cup history with 16 goals.

Speaking after the match, Messi said he was more focused on the emotional moment with his teammates and family than on records.

“To enjoy this with my family, with my teammates… is a really beautiful moment. I’m happy,” he said.

He now shares the record with Germany legend Miroslav Klose, moving ahead of Brazil’s Ronaldo Nazário, who sits on 15 goals, while France star Kylian Mbappé is close behind.

He added that while it was an honour to stand alongside legendary names, the record itself meant little to him.

“In the end, it’s just a statistic and nothing more,” Messi said.

Hat-Trick breaks new ground

The treble marked Messi’s first-ever World Cup hat-trick, further strengthening Argentina’s bid to defend their title and become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.

Coach Lionel Scaloni praised the veteran forward, saying there are “no words” left to describe his impact on the team.

Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister described Messi as the “heartbeat” of the squad, while teammate Rodrigo De Paul called him “a beast.”

Team spirit and fan support

Messi also credited Argentina’s supporters for their unwavering passion, noting the packed stadium atmosphere.

“I’m grateful to the fans… they’ve shown that Argentina is crazy about this,” he said.

He added that the squad remains united and confident as they continue their World Cup campaign.
