The Osun State Police Command has recovered another corpse from the premises of the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife, following a shooting that claimed the life of Accord Party chieftain Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade.
The latest discovery brings to two the number of deaths linked to the violence at the motor park.
Oyeyemi was reportedly shot dead on Sunday during a clash involving rival groups connected to the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, at the Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife.
The circumstances surrounding the clash and the identity of the person whose body was recovered at the park have not been fully established by the police.
The police spokesperson in Osun State, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the recovered corpse had been deposited at a morgue, while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
According to the police, the Mayfair Motor Park has also been shut following the incident.
Ojelabi said the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, had directed that everyone found to have been involved in the incident should be apprehended and made to face the law.
He also advised people mentioned in connection with the violence to report themselves at the nearest police station rather than using social media to respond to the allegations.
The latest development follows the death of Oyeyemi, who was reportedly attacked during a confrontation at the motor park on Sunday.
The police had earlier confirmed that Oyeyemi, also known as Emir, was shot during the incident and said investigations were underway to determine the immediate and remote causes of the shooting and identify those responsible.
Oyeyemi Buried in Osogbo
Meanwhile, the remains of Oyeyemi were buried on Monday at his newly completed residence in the Agunbelewo area of Osogbo, in accordance with traditional rites.
The burial was attended by close family members and traditional priests, while some associates who accompanied his remains from the Osun State University Teaching Hospital reportedly remained outside the premises during the burial rites.
There was also tension at the teaching hospital before the body was released.
Reports said some individuals described as associates of the deceased attacked hospital staff after one of the workers was allegedly seen recording the gathering with a mobile phone. Additional police personnel were later deployed to the hospital to restore order.
Dispute Over NURTW Leadership
The killing has been linked to a wider disagreement involving the leadership and control of motor parks in the state.
Oyeyemi had reportedly been associated with efforts to resolve the leadership crisis within the Osun chapter of the NURTW, with reports indicating that some union members had supported his emergence as the next state chairman.
However, Osun State Commissioner for Transportation, Sesan Oyedele, has denied claims that he summoned NURTW leaders to his residence and told them that the state government had endorsed Oyeyemi for the position.
Oyedele said representatives of different NURTW branches visited him on Sunday morning and informed him that they had agreed to support Oyeyemi as their preferred candidate.
According to the commissioner, he told them he would present their position to Governor Ademola Adeleke and other government officials before the meeting ended.
Oyedele said he received information about Oyeyemi’s death about two hours after the representatives left his residence.
The commissioner maintained that the allegations circulating online about the meeting did not accurately reflect what happened.
Investigation Continues
Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the police to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
The governor also called for calm and directed security agencies to restore order following the violence.
The police investigation has now been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, with authorities expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, identify those responsible and determine how the second person recovered from the motor park died.
For now, the police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
