The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from office after securing the consent of President Bola Tinubu to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

The development followed a meeting on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Mr Adelabu briefed the President on his stewardship in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the minister presented a detailed report on reforms and milestones in the electricity sector.

Resignation plan

The statement confirmed that Mr Adelabu would soon step down from his position in line with political and administrative requirements.

“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days,” the statement said.

It added that the timing of his exit was intended to ensure continuity in ongoing reforms within the sector.

Power sector reforms

During the meeting, Mr Adelabu reportedly outlined key achievements under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and improve efficiency across the power value chain.

A major highlight was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan.

“The NIEP is a comprehensive policy framework designed to guide the sustainable development of Nigeria’s electricity sector,” the statement explained.

It added that the plan focuses on energy security, expanded access, renewable integration, and long-term sector resilience.

Presidential approval

The statement noted that President Tinubu commended Mr Adelabu for his efforts in laying a policy foundation for sector transformation.

“President Tinubu commended the minister for his dedication and the progress recorded… The President also granted his consent and blessing for the minister to pursue his governorship ambition,” Mr Tunji said.

The development aligns with an earlier directive by the President requiring all political appointees seeking elective office to resign on or before 31 March.

Mr Adelabu’s anticipated resignation is therefore in compliance with the rule guiding public office holders with electoral ambitions.

Mr Adelabu is expected to declare his ambition formally in the coming days as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections in Oyo State.
