Mr. Oluwagbenga Abiola, the Vice Chairman of Agege Local Government Area in Lagos State, has withdrawn from the upcoming July 12, 2025, council chairmanship election.
Abiola made the decision in favour of Abdulganiyu Obasa, son of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.
He described the move as a show of loyalty to the Speaker, under whom he has served and from whom he has drawn political mentorship. Abiola stressed that he was not compelled to step down but chose to do so on his own.
“I remain loyal to my leader and the party,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Wednesday, reaffirming his support for both the political structure and Obasa’s influence.
Calls for Abdulganiyu Obasa’s candidacy have been mounting, with political stakeholders in Agege urging the Speaker to support his son’s ambition. They cited Mudashiru Obasa’s long standing service and impact on the development of the area as reasons for the endorsement.
He reaffirmed his commitment to public service and the political success of the ruling party in Agege, noting that greater opportunities lie ahead, directing members of his political base, the Obasa Youth Alliance, to support the party’s decision and back Abdulganiyu Obasa’s candidacy.
