Nigerian Afrobeats star Ayra Starr made history on Sunday, becoming the first African artist to headline the halftime show at an NFL international game, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The 24-year-old opened with “Heaven Baby,” her collaboration with ZAYN, then moved through “Rush,” a medley of “Hot Body” and “Ms. Paper,” “Santa” and “Dangerous.” Dressed in a purple corseted top and black skirt, she played to a record crowd of 61,322.

Before the show, Starr told BBC Newsbeat the performance was “itself a message” about representing African culture on a global stage.

Starr’s set was one of a record seven American Express-presented halftime shows this season and aired live in the UK on Channel 5 and Sky Sports. The two-time Grammy nominee and BET Award winner has more than seven billion streams since her 2021 debut.
