The President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, has welcomed the emerging agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at ending the Middle East war and restoring navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr Costa made the remarks on Monday, expressing optimism that the agreement could open a path toward regional stability and long-term peace.
“I look forward to an end to this costly war and to the full restoration of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” Mr Costa wrote.
He added that the European Union remains ready to support broader diplomatic efforts designed to secure lasting peace across the region.
US, Iran announce framework to end conflict
The United States and Iran announced they had reached a framework agreement intended to halt military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, while reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The agreement is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland later this week.
Although both sides confirmed progress, limited details have been released publicly, particularly regarding unresolved issues tied to Iran’s nuclear programme, which is expected to be addressed in follow-up negotiations during a proposed 60-day diplomatic window.
Trump announces reopening of Strait of Hormuz
Donald Trump announced that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz would resume following the agreement.
In a public statement, he declared:
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete.”
He also announced plans to lift the US naval blockade linked to the conflict and authorised renewed commercial movement through the strategic waterway.
Why the Strait of Hormuz matters
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy corridors, handling a substantial share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments.
Markets reacted positively to news of the agreement, with oil prices falling and investor confidence improving amid expectations that supply disruptions may ease if implementation proceeds successfully.
Analysts caution, however, that major questions, including sanctions, security guarantees, and nuclear negotiations, remain unresolved and could shape whether the agreement delivers durable stability.
