Dr. Omobayo Raheem, Chief Lecturer in the Department of Communication and Language Arts at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), has urged individuals, institutions, and industries to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for national advancement.
Dr. Raheem made this call during the 17th edition of YABATECH’s Inaugural Lecture Series on Thursday evening. His lecture, titled “Capacitance of Artificial Intelligence: Communication, Framing and Learning in a Growing Economy,”explored the potential of AI to reshape key sectors in Nigeria.
In his remarks, YABATECH Rector Dr. Ibraheem Abdul praised the lecture for deepening public understanding of AI and its relevance to communication, media framing, and education.

“We now live in an era driven by digitalisation and globalisation. AI must play a central role in our economic growth,” Abdul said. “As educators and parents, it’s crucial we explore AI’s uses and learn how to adapt it meaningfully to everyday life.”
A former Deputy Rector (Administration), Raheem highlighted that AI could move Nigeria from a developing to a developed economy by boosting productivity, efficiency, and decision-making across industries.
“AI has revolutionised how we live, work, and interact. It is a vital tool with transformative potential,” he stated. “With our human resource base, Nigeria can compete globally. AI is here to stay—and it’s already reshaping the world.”
Raheem noted that Nigeria’s economic growth is hampered by persistent challenges, including poverty, low productivity, high energy costs, rapid population growth, and widespread unemployment.
“We must harness AI’s capabilities to spur economic growth and societal progress while mitigating its risks,” he said. “Poverty remains a major barrier to national development, and many communities in developing countries still lack stable electricity.”
He advocated for the development of educational programmes, instructional materials, and support systems to help educators integrate AI into teaching and learning.
“With the right tools, AI can enhance human potential, promote critical thinking and creativity, and support effective education,” Raheem concluded. “It also offers a strong framework for functional communication and transformative learning—when applied responsibly.”
