The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved the restructuring of the Police Monitoring Unit to enhance discipline and operational efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid.

Mr Placid said the restructuring forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at refocusing the unit on its core mandate and strengthening oversight across commands and formations.

“As part of the reorganisation, the unit has been streamlined and strengthened to enhance proactive monitoring, intelligence-driven inspections, and real-time oversight of police personnel and operations across Commands, Formations, and Departments,” he said.

“The restructured framework also harmonises key investigative and monitoring functions in line with the force’s reform agenda.”

Reform objectives

According to Mr Placid, the initiative is designed to promote professionalism, discipline, and accountability within the force.

He noted that the Monitoring Unit will play a central role in identifying operational lapses, enforcing standards, and ensuring accountability at all levels.

Leadership appointment

As part of the restructuring, the IG approved the appointment of Mr Aliyu Abubakar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, as head of the restructured unit.

Mr Abubakar previously served as Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department in both the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State.

Mr Placid said the officer had played key roles in high-profile investigations, working closely with state authorities to modernise investigative techniques and improve operational effectiveness.
