Instagram has officially discontinued support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages, effective Friday, in a move that raises fresh concerns over digital privacy and secure communication online.
The update was confirmed in a notice published on Instagram’s Help page, stating that encrypted messaging would no longer be available on the platform.
“End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May 2026,” the company said.
What users will experience
According to Instagram, users affected by the change will be guided on how to download their chat history and media before the feature is fully removed.
“If you have chats that are affected by this change, you will see instructions on how you can download any media or messages that you may want to keep,” the platform stated.
The company also noted that some users may need to update their application before accessing download options.
How end-to-end encryption worked
End-to-end encryption is a security feature designed to ensure that only the sender and recipient can access messages or calls, preventing even the platform itself from reading content.
“When you send a message in an end-to-end encrypted chat, your device locks the message as it’s sending,” Instagram explained.
The platform added that only devices with the correct security keys could unlock messages.
“No one can read your messages or hear your calls except the people who have these special keys – not even Meta,” the statement added.
Privacy concerns rise
The decision has triggered widespread debate among users and digital rights advocates over online privacy and data protection, particularly as major platforms continue to adjust messaging policies.
Meta Platforms, Instagram’s parent company, has not provided detailed reasons for the removal of the feature.
While encrypted chats will no longer be supported, Instagram said users may still be able to share content through alternative reporting and forwarding options outside encrypted conversations.
The change effectively marks a shift in how private messaging is handled on one of the world’s most widely used social media platforms.
