The Indigenous People of Biafra has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of its Leader and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both previously associated with detained separatist figure Nnamdi Kanu.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem.
The group said the decision takes immediate effect and remains in place pending further notice.
Move to tighten internal control
According to the statement, the suspension was introduced to safeguard IPOB’s operations, protect members across different regions, and prevent what it described as security breaches in the South-East.
IPOB said the move was necessary to curb individuals allegedly acting without authorisation under the suspended offices.
“Any actions or activities undertaken under the authority of the suspended office would no longer be attributed to IPOB but to those directly involved,” the group stated.
Internal meeting decision
The Directorate of State said the decision was reached during a meeting held on 17 June 2026, where members agreed to impose the suspension in what it described as the wider interest of Biafrans.
It maintained that the movement was not built around any single individual but was founded as a self-determination group representing Biafrans in the diaspora.
Security and operational concerns
The group said the action was influenced by internal intelligence reports and concerns over communications allegedly linked to arrests of members.
It also warned against unauthorised statements or actions that could expose members to arrest, detention, or other security consequences.
IPOB reiterated that it would not take responsibility for activities carried out by persons or groups not officially recognised by its leadership structure.
Despite the internal restructuring, IPOB restated its commitment to a peaceful and non-violent pursuit of self-determination.
“The pursuit of our inalienable right to self-determination is peaceful and non-violent,” the statement added, stressing that its mission must not endanger the people it claims to represent.
