The Kano State Government has distributed working tools to 1,900 butchers drawn from the state’s 44 local government areas as part of its economic empowerment programme aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting food safety.
The distribution took place on Thursday at the Government House in Kano.
Speaking at the event, Governor Abba Yusuf said the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader strategy to empower citizens, strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty and stimulate sustainable economic growth across the state.
“The initiative is part of our administration’s broader agenda to strengthen small businesses, reduce poverty, improve food safety and drive sustainable economic growth across Kano State,” the governor said.
Governor stresses hygiene in meat processing
Governor Yusuf described butchers as critical players in the food supply chain, stressing that maintaining strict hygiene standards in abattoirs and meat processing centres is essential to protecting public health.
He warned that poor sanitary practices could expose consumers to preventable food-borne diseases, noting that hygiene remains the foundation of safe and quality meat production.
The governor urged beneficiaries to make good use of the tools by expanding their businesses, increasing productivity, creating employment opportunities and improving their standard of living.
Commitment to entrepreneurship
According to Mr Yusuf, the Kano State Government will continue implementing policies and programmes that promote entrepreneurship, empower citizens and strengthen key sectors of the state’s economy.
“Sustainable development can only be achieved when people are equipped with the tools and opportunities to become self-reliant,” he added.
Butchers’ association applauds initiative
Chairman of the Kano State Butchers Association, Alhaji Nasiru Isyaku, described the intervention as unprecedented, saying it would significantly improve the welfare of butchers and enhance professionalism within the industry.
He commended Governor Yusuf for recognising the important role butchers play in ensuring food security and safeguarding public health.
Mr Isyaku also pledged that members of the association would continue to uphold hygienic practices and maintain professional standards in their operations.
He noted that empowering artisans and trade associations remains a key component of the state government’s people-centred economic development strategy.
