The Mexican government has formally approved the appointment of Mr Bemigho Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico, ending months of uncertainty surrounding his diplomatic posting.
Mr Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, saying the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, Mr José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the diplomatic agrément confirming Mexico’s acceptance of his appointment.
The document was delivered to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil.
Omokri gets concurrent accreditation
Mr Omokri will not only represent Nigeria in Mexico.
His appointment also comes with concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he will serve as Nigeria’s ambassador to the three countries from his base in Mexico City.
In announcing the approval, Mr Omokri expressed gratitude and confirmed his designation as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Mexican States.
Tinubu nominated Omokri in 2025
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 alongside several other nominees, including former Minister of Aviation, Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate subsequently confirmed the nominees in December 2025.
On 6 March 2026, President Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective missions, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City, Mexico.
Months of uncertainty
Although Mr Omokri had been assigned to Mexico, his posting remained subject to formal acceptance by the Mexican government.
In August, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the relevant authorities and expressed confidence that the outstanding approvals would be received in due course.
Mr Omokri had previously dismissed speculation that Mexico had rejected his appointment.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he attributed the delay to diplomatic processes and Mexico’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the country is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
What is Agrément?
Agrément is the formal consent given by a receiving country before an ambassador nominated by another country can officially be appointed to serve there.
The approval is a standard and important stage in diplomatic appointments and must precede an envoy’s formal assumption of duty.
Omokri’s previous role
Before his ambassadorial appointment, Mr Omokri served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became widely known for his political commentary.
His appointment to Mexico now moves to the next stage of the diplomatic process, with the formal approval from the host country secured.
