Lagos, Nigeria – In a significant drug bust, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended a Nigerian returnee from Thailand, who was found in possession of 3.1 billion naira worth of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, arrived at the airport on October 12, 2024. During a routine check, NDLEA operatives intercepted him, leading to the discovery of 2.5 kilograms of heroin concealed in his luggage. The agency reported that the heroin was packaged in a way to evade detection, highlighting the ongoing challenges of drug trafficking.
NDLEA Chairman Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa commended the operatives for their vigilance and dedication in combating drug trafficking. He stated, “This seizure underscores our commitment to protecting our nation from the scourge of illicit drugs and the associated dangers they pose to society.”
The agency has since initiated further investigations to unravel the broader network behind the trafficking operation and to determine the suspect’s connections to international drug cartels.
This latest arrest marks a continuing trend of significant drug seizures at Nigerian airports, prompting calls for enhanced security measures and international collaboration to combat drug trafficking effectively.
