Niger has finalized an €80 million deal to purchase five Karayel-SU unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from Türkiye. The advanced drones are designed for reconnaissance and surveillance, enhancing Niger’s defense capabilities in response to rising security challenges. Produced by Turkish defense firm Lentatek, these tactical UAVs meet NATO standards and are built for safe operation in civil airspace, featuring advanced avionics for mission-critical communications and operational safety.
The Karayel-SU UAVs come equipped with cutting-edge systems, including lightning protection and automatic de-icing, allowing them to perform in harsh weather conditions. Capable of carrying payloads of up to 190 kg, the drones have a flight endurance of 20 hours and can reach altitudes of 22,500 feet. Their precision cameras and laser designators make them highly effective for both surveillance and combat missions, with control extending up to 200 km or further via satellite communication.
This acquisition is part of Niger’s broader defense strategy, which has included previous orders for Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones and Hurkus light attack aircraft.
Turkey’s defense industry continues to expand its influence across Africa, offering cost-effective and reliable military solutions, with Niger’s latest deal further solidifying Ankara’s role as a major defense supplier to the continent.
