The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has dismissed claims of an impeachment plot against Governor Seyi Makinde, describing them as a “badly written script” aimed at gaining public sympathy.
The party made its position known in a statement issued on Tuesday in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, who argued that the impeachment narrative was a distraction from more pressing political issues.
“Governor Makinde ought to have been impeached long ago if members of the State House of Assembly were alive to their responsibilities,” the statement read, citing alleged cases of abuse of office since 2019.
The APC also dismissed claims linking President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures to the alleged impeachment plot, describing such assertions as baseless.
Assembly denial
Meanwhile, members of the Oyo State House of Assembly have denied involvement in any impeachment plan, distancing themselves from claims that the process was being sponsored by influential individuals.
Among those mentioned in the controversy are the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, and Florence Ajimobi, both of whom were reportedly linked to the alleged plot.
Fayose’s allegation
The development follows fresh allegations by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, who claimed that Governor Makinde was plotting to remove the Olubadan.
In a statement shared on social media, Fayose urged the public to “follow unfolding events,” alleging that recent accusations against the monarch were part of a broader strategy to justify his removal.
APC counter-claims
Reacting, the APC maintained that the impeachment narrative was orchestrated to deflect attention from Fayose’s claims and other controversies surrounding the state government.
“An informed source revealed that the impeachment narrative was designed to mitigate the impact of the allegations made by Fayose,” the statement added.
The party further alleged financial misconduct, including misappropriation of local government funds, land irregularities, contract inflation, and the alleged diversion of a N50bn federal relief fund.
