Human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Mr Omoyele Sowore, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, unveiling what he described as a revolutionary economic agenda aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s political and economic system.
Mr Sowore was elected during the party’s presidential primary held in Abuja on Tuesday, where he declared that the AAC remains Nigeria’s “only genuine opposition” and the country’s only registered socialist political party.
Speaking after his emergence, Mr Sowore said the AAC was not interested in sustaining the current political structure but was committed to fundamentally transforming governance and economic management in Nigeria.
“We are not here to have a seat at the table. We are here to shatter the table from which Nigerians have long been subjected to evil neo-colonial policies designed to keep us as second-class humans,” Mr Sowore stated.
Sowore criticises economic policies
Mr Sowore accused successive Nigerian administrations of implementing economic policies allegedly influenced by international financial institutions while millions of citizens continue to struggle with poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.
According to him, worsening insecurity in the country is directly connected to economic inequality and the exclusion of young Nigerians from opportunities.
“When a few people take everything and leave millions of energetic young people without jobs, hope, or a future, they become easy recruits for forces of destruction,” he said.
The AAC candidate vowed that an AAC-led government would dismantle monopolies, nationalise strategic sectors, and prosecute corrupt public officials.
AAC unveils four economic models
A major highlight of the primary election was the unveiling of four economic models which Mr Sowore said would replace what he described as Nigeria’s “failed Black Economy.”
According to him, the proposed Orange Economy would focus on youth empowerment through technology, entertainment, sports, arts, culture, and digital innovation.
He explained that the Purple Economy would prioritise women’s economic inclusion through improved access to finance, healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and land ownership.
Mr Sowore added that the Blue Economy would develop Nigeria’s waterways and aquatic resources for transportation, industrialisation, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability.
He further said the Green Economy would promote renewable energy, climate-conscious industrialisation, and sustainable agriculture.
“Today, we declare an end to the failed Black Economy, the corrupt economic order built on greed, exploitation, environmental destruction, insecurity, and endless theft of public wealth,” he declared.
Planned nationwide protest
Mr Sowore also announced that the AAC and the #RevolutionNow movement would stage what he called a “Nationwide State of Resistance” on August 5 to protest corruption, oppression, and economic hardship in Nigeria.
“The struggle continues. Victory is certain,” Mr Sowore said as supporters responded with chants of “Take It Back! Action!”
Mr Sowore’s emergence adds to the growing political activities ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition parties and political movements increasingly positioning themselves around economic hardship, insecurity, governance reforms, and youth mobilisation.
The AAC has consistently projected itself as an anti-establishment movement advocating radical political and economic restructuring in Nigeria.
