A political commentator, Zekeri Idris, has claimed that the Federal Government ignored a request by former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for police orderlies after he left office.
Speaking during a recent interview, Idris said Obi had applied to be assigned police officers for his personal security, but the request was not approved. According to him, despite the application, Obi did not receive any police orderlies.
Idris argued that former public office holders, especially those who remain active in politics and public life, often face security challenges and may require official protection. He said such requests should be considered based on security needs rather than political differences.
He also called on the relevant authorities to ensure that security services are provided fairly and professionally to qualified individuals without discrimination.
The claim has generated mixed reactions among Nigerians. While some people believe that public figures like Peter Obi deserve adequate security because of their high profile and frequent public engagements, others insist that the assignment of police personnel should follow existing laws and official guidelines.
As of the time of this report, neither the Nigeria Police Force nor Peter Obi has officially responded to Idris’ claim. There has also been no confirmation from the police regarding whether such an application was submitted or the reasons it may have been approved or declined.
Security experts note that the deployment of police orderlies is regulated by the Nigeria Police Force. The police are responsible for deciding who qualifies for such protection based on security assessments, available personnel, and established policies.
The issue has once again sparked conversations about the use of police officers for VIP protection, especially at a time when many Nigerians have called for more officers to be deployed to community policing and crime prevention.
Many observers say the discussion highlights the need for clear and transparent guidelines on the allocation of police orderlies to public officials, former office holders, and other eligible citizens.
Until an official statement is released by the Nigeria Police Force or Peter Obi, Idris’ comments remain an unverified claim.
