Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has expressed his desire to play in Spain’s La Liga someday, while insisting he remains happy and committed to the Premier League champions.

The 31-year-old Spain international made the disclosure during an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca on Wednesday, leaving the possibility of a future return to his homeland open.

“Yes, I would love to. I would love to try out LaLiga,” Mr Raya said.

“For now, I’m very happy here at Arsenal, but I would certainly like to experience the Spanish league. I think it’s a very competitive league. Perhaps, in the future, I could play for a Spanish club. I’m Spanish, and I’d love to play there, that’s for sure.”

Raya, who was born in Barcelona, left Spain as a teenager and has spent his entire professional career in England.

His contract with Arsenal runs until June 2028.

Raya reflects on successful Arsenal career

The goalkeeper joined Arsenal from Brentford in 2023 on an initial loan deal before completing a permanent transfer the following year.

Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium, he has established himself as a key figure under manager Mikel Arteta, earning recognition for his consistency and performances between the posts.

Raya helped Arsenal win the Premier League title last season and secured his third consecutive Golden Glove award.

He also played a significant role in the club’s progress in the UEFA Champions League and domestic cup competitions.

Reflecting on his recent achievements, the Spaniard described the past season as the best of his professional career, although he regretted not playing during the World Cup.

“I believe I’ve had a perfect year. Perhaps the only thing missing was playing in the World Cup,” he said.

“Every year since I arrived at Arsenal, I’ve continued to improve and hopefully that will keep happening.”

Raya was part of Spain’s World Cup-winning squad but did not feature on the pitch during the tournament.

Arsenal goalkeeper targets more silverware

Despite his interest in experiencing Spanish football in the future, Raya said his immediate priority remained winning trophies with Arsenal.

The goalkeeper said the club were determined to build on their recent success and strengthen their position among Europe’s leading teams.

“My goal is to win everything. We want to establish ourselves as favourites,” he said.

“Hopefully we can go one better this year by lifting the Champions League, but there is still a long way to go.”

His comments come as Arsenal continue their campaign across domestic and European competitions, with Raya expected to remain an important part of Arteta’s plans.

Although he has expressed an ambition to play in La Liga someday, the goalkeeper’s remarks did not amount to a transfer request, as he reiterated his satisfaction with life at Arsenal.
