AC Milan have reportedly opened talks with Mauricio Pochettino as the club intensifies its search for a new head coach following the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri.

Mr Pochettino, who currently manages the United States men’s national soccer team, is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

According to BBC Sport on Friday, the Argentine tactician remains focused on the World Cup project with U.S. Soccer, although Milan are believed to be monitoring his situation closely with plans to potentially appoint him after the tournament.

Milan search for new direction

The Rossoneri decided to part ways with Mr Allegri after the club failed to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Milan ended the Serie A campaign in fifth place following a disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari Calcio on the final day of the season.

Although the club secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League, club executives reportedly viewed the season as unsuccessful after missing out on Europe’s elite competition for the second consecutive year.

Pochettino’s coaching profile

Mr Pochettino has not coached at club level since leaving Chelsea FC at the end of the 2023–24 season.

During his lone campaign at Stamford Bridge, he guided Chelsea to a sixth-place Premier League finish and also reached the Carabao Cup final.

Before his time in England, the former defender managed Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Ligue 1 title and the French Cup.

He is also widely remembered for his successful spell at Tottenham Hotspur FC, leading the London side to the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.

Mr Pochettino’s managerial résumé additionally includes periods with Southampton FC and RCD Espanyol.

As a player, he earned 20 caps for the Argentina national football team.

While Milan’s interest appears serious, reports indicate that any potential move may depend on Mr Pochettino’s commitments with the U.S. national team through the 2026 World Cup.

The situation leaves uncertainty over whether Milan will wait for the Argentine coach or pursue alternative managerial targets before the new Serie A season begins.
