President Bola Tinubu has pledged support for the families of 11 security personnel killed in a bandit attack in Kebbi State.
The assurance was conveyed on Tuesday by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented the president during a condolence visit to the Kebbi State Government House in Birnin Kebbi.
The president also extended sympathies to the government and people of Kebbi State over the killing of the security operatives and the death of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman-Zuru.
Describing the incidents as “profound and painful,” Mr Tinubu condemned the attack on the security personnel, calling it “a barbaric act,” while commending their bravery and sacrifice.
“We are here to express our deep sympathy to the families of the fallen soldiers and the affected communities,” he said.
Security concerns
The attack occurred in Shanga Local Government Area, where the operatives were reportedly ambushed while responding to a distress call.
The incident highlights the continued risks faced by security forces battling banditry in parts of northern Nigeria.
Mr Tinubu assured that the Federal Government would provide necessary support to both the affected families and the state in addressing security challenges.
Condolence over speaker’s death
The president also condoled with Kebbi State over the death of Speaker Muhammad Usman-Zuru, noting that his passing was a significant loss to the state.
Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, said the visit demonstrated the Federal Government’s solidarity during a period of mourning.
“This visit clearly shows your compassion and shared grief with the people of Kebbi State. We deeply appreciate it,” he said.
The governor disclosed that the late speaker had been flown abroad for medical treatment but died despite efforts to save his life.
Traditional support
Also speaking, the Emir of Zuru, Sanusi Mika’ilu, commended the state government for supporting victims’ families and affected communities.
He called for continued collaboration between traditional institutions and government authorities in tackling insecurity.
