President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a stern warning to criminal elements across the country, declaring that there will be no safe haven for bandits and violent offenders following the killing of a notorious bandit leader in Kogi State by Nigerian troops.
The President gave the warning on Tuesday while commending the Armed Forces and security agencies for what he described as a decisive operation that led to the elimination of Ibrahim Bastuji, a suspected bandit kingpin linked to attacks and kidnappings across Kogi and neighbouring states.
According to the Presidency, the operation represents a major setback for criminal networks operating within the region.
“I congratulate our gallant troops on this decisive milestone. Nigeria will not surrender any part of its territory to criminals.
“Those who choose the path of violence against innocent citizens will find no hiding place,” he stated.
Presidency praises security forces
In a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Bastuji’s activities as responsible for prolonged hardship, insecurity and fear among affected communities.
He said the operation reflects renewed commitment by security agencies to reclaim vulnerable areas and restore public confidence.
“This success reflects the renewed determination of our security forces to secure every inch of our land,” he added.
Rescue of ex-defence spokesman’s widow
The President also applauded troops for rescuing Hajiya Amina Abubakar, widow of late former Chief of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar.
Her rescue followed reports that the retired military officer died while in captivity after being abducted alongside his wife in Katsina State.
“The safe return of Hajiya Amina Rabe Abubakar is a source of relief to her family and to all Nigerians,” President Tinubu said.
He praised the intelligence coordination and professionalism of security personnel involved in the operation.
The President reassured Nigerians that his administration would continue investing in resources, training and operational support for security agencies to combat banditry, kidnapping and violent crime nationwide.
He also urged citizens to support security agencies through timely intelligence and community cooperation.
PRP criticises government over security situation
Meanwhile, the Peoples Redemption Party expressed grief over the death of Maj Gen Abubakar and renewed criticism of the Federal Government’s handling of insecurity.
In a statement issued by National Publicity Secretary Muhammed Ishaq, the party described the retired officer’s death in captivity as evidence of deeper security challenges.
“The PRP is profoundly saddened and outraged… This tragic incident is a stark and undeniable testament to the failure of the administration to provide security Nigerians deserve,” the statement said.
The party called for stronger action to secure the release of Nigerians still being held by kidnappers and urged government authorities to move beyond public assurances.
The latest developments come amid sustained military operations across Nigeria’s North-Central and North-West regions, where security forces continue efforts to weaken armed criminal groups and reduce incidents of abduction and violence.
