The United States has announced plans to withdraw about 5,000 troops from Germany within the next year, in a move ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and confirmed by the Pentagon, signaling deepening strains in transatlantic relations.

The development comes as President Donald Trump escalates trade and diplomatic tensions with European allies, including plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on vehicle imports from the European Union.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the withdrawal would be completed within six to twelve months following a strategic review of US military posture in Europe.

“This decision follows a thorough review… in recognition of theatre requirements and conditions on the ground,” he said.

Trade dispute and political clash

The troop withdrawal coincides with a renewed trade dispute, with Trump accusing European nations, particularly Germany, of failing to uphold a previous trade agreement.

He also criticised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over remarks suggesting Iran was outmanoeuvring Washington in negotiations, escalating tensions between both leaders.

Trump said Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” further widening the diplomatic rift.

Threats to broader military presence

The US president has also hinted at reducing troop deployments in other European countries, including Italy and Spain, citing their lack of support for US military efforts in the Middle East.

“Yeah, probably… Why shouldn’t I?” Trump said when asked about further withdrawals.

As of late 2025, the US maintained about 36,000 troops in Germany, alongside thousands more stationed in Italy and Spain.

Strategic fallout

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Berlin was prepared for a possible troop reduction but emphasised the importance of maintaining key US bases such as Ramstein Air Base.

“The base has an irreplaceable function for the United States and for us alike,” he said.

Meanwhile, the European Union stressed that US troop presence in Europe remains mutually beneficial, describing Washington as a “vital partner” in regional security.

Ukraine war and security concerns

The move comes at a sensitive time for European security, with the continent on high alert since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Germany has recently increased defence spending and reaffirmed support for Ukraine, where it remains one of the largest aid contributors after the United States.

Trump, however, has urged European leaders to prioritise ending the Ukraine war, while warning against what he described as interference in US policy on Iran.

The planned troop withdrawal underscores a broader shift in US foreign policy, with Washington pushing European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defence.

Analysts say the combination of military drawdowns, trade tariffs, and political disagreements could significantly reshape NATO dynamics and long-standing security arrangements between the US and Europe.
