Arsenal defender William Saliba has used his time on the sidelines to reconnect with his Cameroonian heritage, visiting his ancestral home as he continues recovering from the injury that ended his 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
The French international travelled to Douala, where he reunited with his extended maternal family and paid an emotional visit to his grandmother. The trip offered the 25-year-old an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones while taking a break from his rehabilitation programme.
Saliba also met several well-known local personalities, including Ayi Ventilateur and Ali Hob, and took time to engage with fans in the community. In a gesture that was warmly received, the Arsenal centre-back handed out Gunners shirts to supporters, creating memorable moments for young football enthusiasts.
Born in Bondy, France, Saliba has consistently expressed pride in his Cameroonian roots through his mother’s side of the family. His latest visit further reflects the strong bond he continues to maintain with his ancestral homeland.
Recovery Continues After World Cup Setback
The visit comes after Saliba suffered an injury during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, forcing him to miss the latter stages of the tournament.
France nevertheless advanced to the semi-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain. Les Bleus later finished fourth after falling to England in the third-place playoff.
One of the highlights of Saliba’s stay in Cameroon was meeting legendary striker Samuel Eto’o, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers. The encounter brought together two prominent figures with deep ties to Cameroonian football.
As he continues his rehabilitation, the visit has provided Saliba with a chance to recover mentally, reconnect with his family’s heritage, and prepare for his return to Arsenal ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
