World Cup debutants Cape Verde have booked a historic place in the knockout stage after holding Saudi Arabia to a goalless draw on Friday, setting up a blockbuster clash against defending champions Argentina.

The result in Houston, combined with Spain’s narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay, ensured Cape Verde finished second in Group H and extended one of the tournament’s most remarkable stories.

The island nation, ranked 67th globally and home to just over 500,000 people, progressed without winning a match, recording three draws to reach the knockout rounds in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Their reward is a high-profile encounter against Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Miami on 3 July.

Historic qualification

The final whistle sparked emotional celebrations among Cape Verde players and supporters, many of whom waited anxiously for confirmation of Spain’s result before realising qualification had been secured.

Scenes of jubilation followed both inside the stadium and back home in the capital city, Praia, where fans celebrated into the early hours.

Midfielder Deroy Duarte described the achievement as surreal.

“I’m living in a dream to be honest,” he said.

Head coach Bubista, speaking after the match while wrapped in the national flag, said belief within the squad had carried them through.

“We had this in our minds and heads that we could get to this stage.

“We felt the team was very eager to show this to the whole world.

“We are proud to get to this stage and again have showed the world that we are a small country but we fight for what we want.

“To us, nothing is impossible.”

How Cape Verde got there

Cape Verde opened their campaign with a famous goalless draw against European champions Spain before securing another impressive result in a 2-2 draw against Uruguay.

Those performances gave the debutants a realistic chance heading into the decisive meeting with Saudi Arabia.

Against the Saudis, Cape Verde arguably created the clearer opportunities despite the pressure of qualification.

Jamiro Monteiro and Kevin Pina both came close after the break, while goalkeeper Vozinha once again produced a composed display to help preserve the point.

Saudi Arabia struggled to create clear openings despite needing victory, and Cape Verde nearly snatched all three points late in the contest.

Knockout challenge awaits

Cape Verde now face their toughest test yet against Argentina as they look to continue their dream World Cup campaign.

Meanwhile, Spain advanced as Group H winners and will meet the runners-up from Group J in the next round.

The qualification marks another milestone for Cape Verde, becoming one of the smallest nations by population to ever reach the World Cup knockout stages.
